The department is the Australian Government’s focal point for delivering social and
health-related services and payments to the Australian community. We are responsible
for the design, development, delivery, co-ordination and monitoring of government
services, social security, child support, students, families, aged care, and health
programs and superannuation release.
Through the delivery of health and welfare payments and services, we touch the lives
of around 99 per cent of Australians. We are developing innovative approaches to
improve service delivery in close collaboration with the community and our partner
agencies. As part of this work, the department also provides support to Australians
with changing circumstances, facing financial hardship or suffering from natural disasters.

Residency requirements for Graduates wishing to apply
Australian Citizens Only.
Roles available for Graduates
Generalist pathway – provides two placements, each lasting five months, allowing graduates to participate in diverse projects and learn how different areas operate.
• All degrees are eligible.
Professional pathways – provides a single placement, offering graduates the opportunity to focus their career in a particular area and specialise in and develop their skills and experience. Previous Professional pathways offered by the department include:
• Allied Health
• Data Analytics
• Human Resources
• Information and Communication Technology
Applicants are able to apply for either the Generalist pathway, Professional pathway or both, however you can only participate in one pathway during the program. Graduates are not able to change their pathway once they have commenced in the department.
Degree Subjects Required for Graduates wishing to apply
All degrees are eligible for the Generalist pathway, if you are wanting to apply for a Professional pathway then refer to the information available on our website regarding degree methodology.
To be eligible for our program you must have completed a minimum of an Australian recognised undergraduate degree within three years of the date our applications open.
