Australian Government department

Employer Profile

From 1 February 2020 our Department name will be the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment. The Department designs and implements Australian Government policy and programs to protect and conserve the environment, water and heritage. In addition, the expanded remit of the Department will enable you to experience environment and environmental compliance functions, as well as new policy and program areas including biosecurity, farming, forestry, fishery, drought and water.

Our Graduate Program aims to equip recent university graduates with the skills and knowledge to place them in a competitive position within the Department and the Australian Public Service. The Graduate Program bridges the gap between university and the public service, facilitates networking within and outside the Department, and provides opportunities for a broad experience to kick off your career.

Our work is developed and implemented through a lens of economic, social and environmental considerations. We want experts from a range of fields and diverse backgrounds and experiences so our advice, policies and programs meet the needs and expectations of the community, industry, governments and stakeholders. Our program is for candidates from all disciplines and we are proud of the diverse and inclusive graduate cohort we recruit each year, coming together with different life and work experience, qualifications, ages, cultural backgrounds, genders, religious beliefs, and abilities.

We have a great retention rate, with a high percentage of our graduates continuing their careers with us many years after they have completed their graduate program. Our graduates stay because of the diverse interesting work, excellent work/life balance, and strong and inclusive culture the Department offers.
